Selection Of Stainless Steel Piping For Data Center Liquid Cooling System: Why Are High-density Computing Projects Increasingly Inclined Towards 316L Rather Than 304?

At the beginning of last year, we received a call from a data center integrator in Oslo, Norway, with an anxious tone. They had just delivered an edge computing node along the coast. Just 14 months after its deployment, during a routine inspection, it was discovered that the internal pressure of the CDU (Cooling Distribution Unit) was abnormal. After disassembling and investigating, the culprit was found to be the 304 stainless steel piping that was originally considered "adequate" - under the combined effects of seawater salt fog erosion and the long-term flushing by the cooling fluid, a significant pitting perforation appeared in a heat affected zone of one weld seam, causing a leakage of deionized water and almost leading to a major server outage accident. This call marked the beginning of our four-year cooperation with this client, and it also profoundly confirmed why in high-standard liquid cooling projects, 316L is comprehensively replacing 304.

This customer's initial choice was not an isolated case. Many engineering teams, in an effort to reduce the initial construction costs, tend to use 304 stainless steel in the secondary piping. However, the corrosive environment of the liquid cooling system is far more complex than imagined. Even if deionized water is used, as the system operates, the resistivity inevitably fluctuates, and the trace amount of chloride ions dissolved in the water begin to exert their power; if it is a water-ethylene glycol solution, during the high-temperature circulation, it will degrade and produce organic acids. After our technical team intervened and analyzed, it was discovered that the fatal flaw of this project lies in "weld corrosion": The 304 material has a higher carbon content. During welding, the high temperature causes chromium carbide to precipitate at the grain boundaries, creating "poor chromium" areas, making the weld seam and the adjacent areas the weakest and most vulnerable part of the entire piping system to fail first.

To address this issue, we recommended to the customers the main product - the 316L low-carbon stainless steel liquid-cooled pipe in accordance with the ASTM A269 standard. Compared with 304, the key advantage of 316L lies in the addition of 2%-3% of molybdenum (Mo) and the strict control of carbon content below 0.03%. The addition of molybdenum significantly increases the material's corrosion resistance to pitting (PREN > 24), specifically addressing the risk of perforation caused by chloride ions; while the "L" grade low-carbon property fundamentally eliminates intergranular corrosion in the welding heat-affected zone. Considering that this project is located in an area with a coastal environment, high air humidity and high salt content, we recommended that the customers replace the entire pipeline with 316L material and perform strict acid washing and passivation treatment on all welds to rebuild the chemical defense barrier of the pipeline system.

After the plan was determined, our production base in China responded promptly. Thanks to the large stock that we always have on hand, we immediately dispatched 316L precision welded pipes of two specifications, Φ22mm and Φ42mm. Unlike ordinary industrial pipes, the liquid-cooled pipes we provided to this customer had undergone internal wall electrolytic polishing treatment, with the surface roughness controlled at Ra ≤ 0.8 μm. This completely removed the free iron and oxides on the inner wall, ensuring that no particles would fall off and block the micro-flow channels of the cold plate in the future operation. At the same time, to meet the need for rapid on-site installation, we provided services of fixed-length cutting and pipe end caps, ensuring that the pipe material remained highly clean upon arrival. From receiving the order to loading the containers for shipment, the entire process took only 72 hours.

The replacement project was completed within one week. Now, this system, which is entirely made of China Super Tech 316L stainless steel liquid cooling pipes, has been operating stably in the Norwegian data center for over 15 months. During this period, the customer conducted multiple re-inspections, and the inner wall of the pipes remained smooth as before, there were no signs of corrosion at the weld seams, and the electrical conductivity of the cooling fluid remained within the ideal range. In the recent visit, the customer expressed: "That leakage incident cost us a lot of money. Now it seems that choosing your stock-ful 316L pipe material, although the unit price is slightly higher, saved us the cost of downtime and reputation loss. This is truly a good value for money."

This case is not an isolated example. It reflects the inevitable choice in the current era of high-density computing power. Whether it's deionized water, water glycol, or the increasingly popular special coolant, the tests on the pipelines are intensifying. China Super Tech Co., Ltd., leveraging its in-depth control over 316L and 304L stainless steel liquid cooling pipes, as well as its full-range inventory covering Φ6mm to Φ108mm, is providing "just-in-time" one-stop services to global customers. We do not produce coolant, but we ensure that every inch of the pipe carrying the coolant is as solid as a rock. When your next data center project faces corrosion challenges, you might want to refer to the experience of this Norwegian customer - choosing the right material means choosing the longest stable operation time.
